Biographical Text

Quibell is best known for his work with W. M. Flinders Petrie. Together they excavated Coptos (1893), which revealed artifacts leading back to the First Dynasty, and Naqada and Ballas where they found pre-dynastic artifacts. Quibell also excavated Hierakonpolis. He worked with Somers Clarke to discover the Narmer palette and the remains of the oldest temple found in Egypt. Quibell bacame part of the Antiquities Service staff and later was the Chief Inspector of Antiquities in the Delta (1898). He discovered the tomb of Yuaa and Thuiu in 1905, working with Theodore Davis, and excavated the monastery of St. Jeremias before retiring in 1925.
