Biographical Text

He was born to a well-off banking family, and was sent in 1879 to Egypt for health reasons. In Egypt, he rented a dahabeeya and travelled along the Nile for a number of years, spending the summers in Cairo or Alexandria, and traveling south for the winters.

He first explored the country by boating expedition, and then settled in Luxor in his own dahabeeya, the "Meermin" (Mermaid) in 1884. In 1888 he began constructing a house in Luxor. The official name of the house, "Palmenburg", references his family's summerhouse, "Pijnenburg" in Baarn, the Netherlands. The house in Luxor was often referred to as a castle because of its size and grandeur. Emma refers to it as "The Castle" in her diary. The Castle is located on the East Bank of the Nile, between what is currently Club Med and Iberotel.
