Biographical Text
Born to a protestant family, Giovanni Morelli studied medicine at the universities of Munich and Erlangen because Italy had banned protestants from universities. Once graduated, he never practiced medicine but began his career in art under a pseudonym in a mock study of iconography (analysis of subject matter and its meaning in the visual arts). Until 1840, Morelli lived in Paris, where he gave up science for good. He then returned to Italy, serving in the Risorgimento ("Rising Again" - political movement for Italian unification which produced the Kingdom of Italy in 1861). He became Senator of the unified Italy in 1873, and went on to chair many commissions of art. Most importantly, Morelli helped enact legislation which forbade export of art treasures from Italy, and which standardized conservation practices of museums. He played an instrumental role in saving many masterpieces for Italy.
Morelli didn't publish the first work concerning his methodology of art, "Italian Masters in German Galleries," until 1876 as a series of articles and then as a book in 1880. He explored this "Morellian Method" again in his treatise, "Italian Painters: Critical Studies Of Their Work," which used the perspectives of two famed art scholars to speculate on the authenticity of the attribution of many works of art. Essentially, he criticized each work by explaining why it could be correctly attributed (credited to an era, place, artist, etc.) and why it could be a fake or falsely attributed, without ever making any real accusations.
The "Morellian Method" supports the idea that the key to correctly attributing a painting lies in the homology of the works of the era/place/artist to which it should be attributed. More specfically, the idea that "all painters, however great, tend to fall back on a formula for rendering such details as the ear or fingernails, and. . . these minor details are therefore the most characteristic parts of a picture and the surest guide to attribution" (Giovanni Morelli). The principal follower of this method, Bernard Berenson, helped Morelli correct hundreds of false attributions. Morelli's influence opened doors for Berenson that enabled him to establish his career. Morelli's work influenced many other art historians, including Jean Paul Richter, who went on to work for Theodore Davis.
Morelli was the first known owner of the mysterious 'Donna Laura Minghetti Leonardo.' In his will, he left the painting to Donna Laura Minghetti, the widow of two-time Italian Prime Minister, Marco Minghetti, who Morelli connoisseursed for, befriended, and guided in artistic scholarship. He referred to Donna Laura when writing to a friend as "good and wholly lovable – but, unfortunately, like all the women equipped with such excellent qualities, essa è tiranna. And I am too old for allowing someone tyrannise me, since I cannot be hoping anymore for efficient revolts with a happy result. Thus I prefer to see her and to stay with her only two or three times a year – with all the friendship and sympathy that I have for her" (Seybold).

Notable Family Members
Family members of historical significance.
His father was the distinguished Lutheran clergyman, Karl Edmund Richter.
Biographical Text
Because his father was a respected clergyman, Richter started off in theology, traveling through Europe and the East frequently as a student. This led to a job writing for Karl Baedecker, who published infamously non-PC travel guides. He met Morelli in 1876, who heavily influenced his career and provided him with letters of introduction when he moved to London in 1877. He first published in 1878, and then turned his focus to the Italian Renaissance (following Morelli's Method). In 1883 he published "Literary Works of Leonardo," a scholarly examination of his notebooks and other works. Richter is responsible for introducing the young American art historian, Bernard Berenson, another Morelli disciple. Starting in April of 1898, Richter began meeting with Theodore and Emma for lunch and other social occasions, to discuss art and eventually the 'Donna Laura Minghetti Leonardo.' He and Theodore physically acquired the painting on April 20th, 1898.
Ritcher continued life as a scholar of Leonardo, publishing more books on art. He was a very successful collector and dealer. His personal collecting philosophy was to only own one work of a particular artist, and then sell that work if he acquired a better work from that artist. A businessman at heart, he often chose personal monetary gain (dealing) over artistic scholarship and preservation (donation to a museum); this led to a controversial reputation for most of his career. His last book, co-written with his daughter, another art historian, was published just after his death in Lugano, Switzerland.

Biographical Text
Berenson majored in Literature and learned several languages at Harvard University. This shaped his career as an art historian, critic, and collector in Italy. He first published work in art history in 1893. He published a manifesto of Morelli's Method in 1895, and published an essay detailing his own method in the same year.
Berenson introduced the 'Donna Laura Minghetti Leonardo' to artistic literature in 1896, praising it through implying it were comparable to the 'Mona Lisa.' When Davis and Andrews took the painting to London, its attribution began to be questioned. Berenson supported the new attribution to a Tuscan painter, Angiolo Tricca, who had died in 1884. Berenson did a complete 180 degree turn on the attribution of this painting, first claiming that is was Da Vinci's greatest work next to the universally revered 'Mona Lisa,' then fully backing the claim that the painting was a forgery. This lost Berenson quite a bit of credibility in art connoisseurship, nearly costing him his career. He would later officially declare in one of his books that after much research and deliberation, he no longer believed the work to be a 'Leonardo.'
However, there may be a reasonable explanation for this. According to Dietrich Seybold, Ph.D., an (art) history researcher, Berenson may have been just following what he thought the leading art authorities believed about the work. Seybold asserts that Morelli calling the painting a 'Leonardo' was to play a trick on his followers; Donna Laura Minghetti knew about it, and Jean Paul Richter was taken in by it at first. Richter mentioned the work was attributed to Leonardo eleven years before Berenson did, thus Berenson followed what Richter had claimed what Morelli believed: that the painting was an authentic Leonardo Da Vinci.
Berenson continued to publish and collect art throughout his life, and died in Villa I Tatti, Florence, Italy, in 1959,

Biographical Text
The great-great grandnephew of Emma B. Andrews, he was the great-great grandson of her oldest sister, Eveline Buttles. His parents divorced before he was two, and both were reluctant to take him with them. Emma's nieces, Jeanette "Nettie" Buttles and Mary (Mamie) Buttles, took him with them to Italy; they moved to Florence in 1896 for the purpose of studying and painting. Allen had a gift for languages, and enlisted in WWII in the Navy when he was 17. He served as the captain's interpreter when they were in port. On D-Day, Allen piloted an LST. When Mary passed in 1956, Allen smuggled the 'Donna Laura Minghetti Leonardo' out of Italy, as the executer of her estate. The painting was allegedly too large to ship to the US, and was hidden behind the backseat of the vehicle Allen drove from Italy to Switzerland.
When Bernard Berenson declared in one of his books that the painting was not actually a Leonardo Da Vinci, Allen had the painting x-rayed at the University of Zurich and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This revealed that there was no sketch under the painting, which suggested that it was started by Leonardo but finished by a student. Hence, the painting is now deemed to be a product of the "school of Leonardo.'
While born in Ohio, his close relationship with Nettie and especially Mary Buttles reveals he spent quite a lot of time in Florence, where she lived. Allen got married in Florence in May of 1948, to Eleanor Louise Newton. They later divorced in June of 1981 in Leon Florida, where he died. Allen is buried with Mary, her sister Nettie, and their mother, Mary Ridgeway, in the Allori Cemetery in Florence.

Gaston Maspero was a French Egyptologist who taught Egyptian language at the College de France, and in 1880 he went to Egypt as head of an archaeological mission that became the French Institute of Oriental Archaeology. Appointed by the Egyptian government in 1881 as Director General of Antiquities, where he recorded scenes and inscriptions on tombs at Saqqara. In 1881 his work led to the discovery of a royal tomb that held the mummies of Thutmose III, Seti I, Amenhotep I, and Ramses II. After some time in Paris, in 1889 he returned to Egypt where he directed an archaeological survey of Nubia, and cataloged and archived a vast collection of Egyptian artifacts that became the basis for today's Egyptian Museum in Cairo, which he co-founded in 1902.

Biographical Text
Mary Cassatt was an American impressionist painter. She spent the majority of her life in Europe, particularly in France.
In 1910, Cassatt joined her brother Joseph Gardner’s family on a voyage to Egypt where they took a boat trip along the Nile River sightseeing in Cairo, Luxor and Aswan. During the trip, Cassatt visited with Emma on her houseboat where she famously referred to Emma as a “woman pirate,” in a letter to fellow artist Isadora Duncan.
Unfortunately, her brother Joseph contracted an illness there and died shortly after the trip. Cassatt’s art became increasingly melancholy until she stopped painting all together in 1914 due to cataracts in her eyes. Cassatt passed away in 1926.

Biographical Text
Henry R. Newman was a pre-Raphaelite watercolour painter from New York who used a Victorian painting techniques to stay true in his depiction of the environment around him. He and his wife, an Englishwoman named Mary Watson Willis whom he married in June 1883, had permanent residence in an apartment at 1 Piazza dei Rossi in Florence, Italy. Newman was highly praised for his artistic abilities and his fantastic use of colour within his watercolour paintings, which at that time were difficult to work with. In his late 50's, Newman and his wife began to travel to Egypt to paint during the winters and became friends with American Egyptologist Charles Edwin Wilbour.

Biographical Text
Emma B. Andrews was born in Ohio to Joel and Lauretta Buttles. She married Abner L. Andrews in 1859 and the couple produced either one or two children: records indicate the couple may have had a son named Charles and that Emma may also have given birth to another child, a girl, that died in infancy. A few years into their marriage, Abner was committed to a mental institution for undisclosed reasons.
In 1887, Emma met Theodore Davis and the two began a passionate romance. She moved in with him at his estate, The Reef, and eventually removed his wife Annie from the household. Davis, a millionaire lawyer turned archaeologist brought Emma along with him on his 17 trips up the Nile in search of Egyptian Antiquities. To avoid scandal while travelling abroad, Andrews and Davis passed as cousins. In her diaries, there are notes on notable discoveries and sketches of the many tombs, as well as incredible insight into Victorian life and culture. After Theodore's death in 1915, Emma spent a great deal of time in Italy before she passed away in 1922 at the age of 84.

Biographical Text
Theodore Davis was born in New York and later began a career as an attorney. After amassing a large fortune, he moved to Newport, Rhode Island and built his estate named 'The Reef'. Beginning in 1902, Davis sponsored excavations in the Valley of the Kings under the Egyptian Antiquities Service with the help of famous archaeologists including Edward Aryton, Harry Burton, and Howard Carter. His sponsorship led to some of the most important archaeological discoveries in Egyptology with the excavations of KV45 (tomb of Queen TIye), KV47 (tomb of Horemheb), KV55 (the Amarna cache), and KV54 (Tutankhamen's embalming cache) along with dozens of other notable tombs.

Samuel Carter, father, artist.
Biographical Text
Howard Carter first discovered his interest in Egypt when his father, Samuel Carter, a well known artist, painted a portrait of an egyptologist. At 17, Carter was send to Egypt to be a sketch artist for George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon, a financier of Egyptian excavations. Lord Carnarvon was granted permission to dig in the area that King Tutankhamun's tomb was located, but gave Carter the task of excavating there. In 1922 Carter discovered the steps to tomb of Tutankhamun and he and Lord Carnarvon entered the tomb and eventually found Tutankhamun's mummy. He remained in Egypt for 10 years after his famous discovery and then worked for museums collecting artifacts. He is arguably the most well known Egyptologist of all time.

After her death, she became known as a "Benefactor of Egyptian Womanhood" by the students she taught in Luxor.

J.P. Morgan was born into a family of bankers which influenced his own decision to enter the financial world. The financial empire he built was so successful and powerful that even the United States government turned to him for advice in times of trouble. His power and status did not come without criticism though, as he was accused of creating business monopolies and unfair advantages.
