Joseph Lindon Smith Diaries and Letters

View the Lindon Smith Collection (in process).

One of the projects falling under the Emma B. Andrews group umbrella is the transcription of a couple of diaries written by the artist Joseph Lindon Smith and his family during the seasons he worked with Theodore Davis in the Valley of the Kings (1904-5 and 1906-7). The quirky observations are interspersed with doodles and lists which will make for an interesting TEI encoding challenge. We also have a small corpus of correspondence to encode.

Letter dated March 4th 1906 written by Joseph Lindon Smith on SS Serapis stationery.

Inspector of Antiquities Arthur Weigall wrote a permission note for Smith to camp near the temple of Abu Simbel for a ‘few days.’
