He retired after a brief but profitable career in 1881 and established permanent residence in Paris in 1889 at the age of 47. He and his wife Julia lived at 82, Avenue des Champs-Élysées. By 1910 his fortune was enormous, and he gave away millions of dollars to his alma mater, Dartmouth College. He married the former Julia Snell in 1872, and they made their home in Paris, and in Vert Mont, a country villa outside the city. They also had a winter residence in Monte Carlo. His life was characterized by his generous philanthropic and charitable spirit.
