<text>Theodore Davis was born in New York and later began a career as an attorney. After amassing a large fortune, he moved to Newport, Rhode Island and built his estate named 'The Reef'. Beginning in 1902, Davis sponsored excavations in the Valley of the Kings under the Egyptian Antiquities Service with the help of famous archaeologists including Edward Aryton, Harry Burton, and Howard Carter. His sponsorship led to some of the most important archaeological discoveries in Egyptology with the excavations of KV45 (tomb of Queen TIye), KV47 (tomb of Horemheb), KV55 (the Amarna cache), and KV54 (Tutankhamen's embalming cache) along with dozens of other notable tombs. </text>
