He retired after a brief but profitable career in 1881 and established permanent residence in Paris in 1889 at the age of 47. He and his wife Julia lived at 82, Avenue des Champs-Élysées. By 1910 his fortune was enormous, and he gave away millions of dollars to his alma mater, Dartmouth College. He married the former Julia Snell in 1872, and they made their home in Paris, and in Vert Mont, a country villa outside the city. They also had a winter residence in Monte Carlo. His life was characterized by his generous philanthropic and charitable spirit.</text>

<text>In Volume 3 of her diaries, Emma describes Mr. Chester as a man who had been wintering in Egypt for the past 20 years and knew a great deal about the area. He also accompanied the travel party for some time in 1890 (volume 1), offering advice on the purchase of antiquities and commentary on dealing with customs houses. An Oxford-educated clergyman, Chester retired from the cloth for health reasons in 1865 and began his travels. His frequent visits to Egypt and the Near East and tenacious bargaining skills led him to collect antiquities and papyri which he gave to the Ashmolean and Fitzwilliam Museums, amongst others. He published articles on Coptic Churches in Egypt, as well as rock drawings and epigraphy. His most important work was the Catalogue of the Egyptian Antiquities in the Ashmolean Museum, which Petrie greatly admired.</text>

He first explored the country by boating expedition, and then settled in Luxor in his own dahabeeya, the "Meermin" (Mermaid) in 1884. In 1888 he began constructing a house in Luxor. The official name of the house, "Palmenburg", references his family's summerhouse, "Pijnenburg" in Baarn, the Netherlands. The house in Luxor was often referred to as a castle because of its size and grandeur. Emma refers to it as "The Castle" in her diary. The Castle is located on the East Bank of the Nile, between what is currently Club Med and Iberotel. </text>

<text>Donna Laura was born as Laura Acton, and descended from Sir John Acton, a well-known Prime Minister of the two Sicilies. She was a lively child, and entered a Neopolitan nun convent at twelve years old. As a teenager she traveled in many circles and made friends that included royalty and future artistic scholars. At 18 years old, Laura married Domenico Beccadelli di Bologna, and entered high society life between Palermo and Naples. After 16 years of marriage, Laura became a widow in 1863. One year later she married the 46-year-old statesman Marco Minghetti. He resigned from prime ministership a few weeks later, after the September Convention (a treaty between France and Italy signed on September 15, 1864 under which Napoleon III withdrew all French troops from Rome within two years).

In 1871, the Minghetti's moved to Rome, and Donna Laura's famous salon was put in place at piazza Paganica. Her salon was called the "most popular in Rome" by Ferdinand Gregorovius, a German historian (Seybold). Donna Laura's charm, accomplishments, charisma, and flirtatious disposition allowed her to collect a cohort of high society members that would gather in her salon. Lillie de Hegermann-Lindencrone, a trained singer and diplomat's wife, stated that "Rome flocks there to hear music and to admire the artistic manner in which the rooms are arranged; flirtations are rife in the twilit corners, in which the salon abounds. As Madame Minghetti is very musical and appreciative, all the people one meets there pretend to be musical and appreciative, and do not talk or flirt during the music" (Seybold).

In 1886, Marco Minghetti died, leaving Donna Laura Minghetti a widow for the second time. Morelli was Marco's most intimate friend, and performed the closing of Minghetti's eyes. Donna Laura was then supported by Francesco Brioschi, a family friend. When Morelli died in 1891, she inherited the 'Donna Laura Minghetti Leonardo.' In 1898, the work was sold to the American millionaire turned archaeological excavator / art collector, Theodore Davis, as an authentic Leonardo DaVinci. However, a letter from a close friend about the transaction reveals Donna Laura was aware that Morelli had not attributed the painting as a Leonardo Da Vinci (see Lady Layard's Letter). Donna Laura died at Mezzarratta on September 12, 1915. </text>

<text>Born to a protestant family, Giovanni Morelli studied medicine at the universities of Munich and Erlangen because Italy had banned protestants from universities. Once graduated, he never practiced medicine but began his career in art under a pseudonym in a mock study of iconography (analysis of subject matter and its meaning in the visual arts). Until 1840, Morelli lived in Paris, where he gave up science for good. He then returned to Italy, serving in the Risorgimento ("Rising Again" - political movement for Italian unification which produced the Kingdom of Italy in 1861). He became Senator of the unified Italy in 1873, and went on to chair many commissions of art. Most importantly, Morelli helped enact legislation which forbade export of art treasures from Italy, and which standardized conservation practices of museums. He played an instrumental role in saving many masterpieces for Italy.

Morelli didn't publish the first work concerning his methodology of art, "Italian Masters in German Galleries," until 1876 as a series of articles and then as a book in 1880. He explored this "Morellian Method" again in his treatise, "Italian Painters: Critical Studies Of Their Work," which used the perspectives of two famed art scholars to speculate on the authenticity of the attribution of many works of art. Essentially, he criticized each work by explaining why it could be correctly attributed (credited to an era, place, artist, etc.) and why it could be a fake or falsely attributed, without ever making any real accusations.

The "Morellian Method" supports the idea that the key to correctly attributing a painting lies in the homology of the works of the era/place/artist to which it should be attributed. More specfically, the idea that "all painters, however great, tend to fall back on a formula for rendering such details as the ear or fingernails, and. . . these minor details are therefore the most characteristic parts of a picture and the surest guide to attribution" (Giovanni Morelli). The principal follower of this method, Bernard Berenson, helped Morelli correct hundreds of false attributions. Morelli's influence opened doors for Berenson that enabled him to establish his career. Morelli's work influenced many other art historians, including Jean Paul Richter, who went on to work for Theodore Davis.

Morelli was the first known owner of the mysterious 'Donna Laura Minghetti Leonardo.' In his will, he left the painting to Donna Laura Minghetti, the widow of two-time Italian Prime Minister, Marco Minghetti, who Morelli connoisseursed for, befriended, and guided in artistic scholarship. He referred to Donna Laura when writing to a friend as "good and wholly lovable – but, unfortunately, like all the women equipped with such excellent qualities, essa è tiranna. And I am too old for allowing someone tyrannise me, since I cannot be hoping anymore for efficient revolts with a happy result. Thus I prefer to see her and to stay with her only two or three times a year – with all the friendship and sympathy that I have for her" (Seybold).</text>

<text>Because his father was a respected clergyman, Richter started off in theology, traveling through Europe and the East frequently as a student. This led to a job writing for Karl Baedecker, who published infamously non-PC travel guides. He met Morelli in 1876, who heavily influenced his career and provided him with letters of introduction when he moved to London in 1877. He first published in 1878, and then turned his focus to the Italian Renaissance (following Morelli's Method). In 1883 he published "Literary Works of Leonardo," a scholarly examination of his notebooks and other works. Richter is responsible for introducing the young American art historian, Bernard Berenson, another Morelli disciple. Starting in April of 1898, Richter began meeting with Theodore and Emma for lunch and other social occasions, to discuss art and eventually the 'Donna Laura Minghetti Leonardo.' He and Theodore physically acquired the painting on April 20th, 1898.

Ritcher continued life as a scholar of Leonardo, publishing more books on art. He was a very successful collector and dealer. His personal collecting philosophy was to only own one work of a particular artist, and then sell that work if he acquired a better work from that artist. A businessman at heart, he often chose personal monetary gain (dealing) over artistic scholarship and preservation (donation to a museum); this led to a controversial reputation for most of his career. His last book, co-written with his daughter, another art historian, was published just after his death in Lugano, Switzerland.</text>

<text>Berenson majored in Literature and learned several languages at Harvard University. This shaped his career as an art historian, critic, and collector in Italy. He first published work in art history in 1893. He published a manifesto of Morelli's Method in 1895, and published an essay detailing his own method in the same year.

Berenson introduced the 'Donna Laura Minghetti Leonardo' to artistic literature in 1896, praising it through implying it were comparable to the 'Mona Lisa.' When Davis and Andrews took the painting to London, its attribution began to be questioned. Berenson supported the new attribution to a Tuscan painter, Angiolo Tricca, who had died in 1884. Berenson did a complete 180 degree turn on the attribution of this painting, first claiming that is was Da Vinci's greatest work next to the universally revered 'Mona Lisa,' then fully backing the claim that the painting was a forgery. This lost Berenson quite a bit of credibility in art connoisseurship, nearly costing him his career. He would later officially declare in one of his books that after much research and deliberation, he no longer believed the work to be a 'Leonardo.'

However, there may be a reasonable explanation for this. According to Dietrich Seybold, Ph.D., an (art) history researcher, Berenson may have been just following what he thought the leading art authorities believed about the work. Seybold asserts that Morelli calling the painting a 'Leonardo' was to play a trick on his followers; Donna Laura Minghetti knew about it, and Jean Paul Richter was taken in by it at first. Richter mentioned the work was attributed to Leonardo eleven years before Berenson did, thus Berenson followed what Richter had claimed what Morelli believed: that the painting was an authentic Leonardo Da Vinci.

Berenson continued to publish and collect art throughout his life, and died in Villa I Tatti, Florence, Italy, in 1959, </text>

<text>The great-great grandnephew of Emma B. Andrews, he was the great-great grandson of her oldest sister, Eveline Buttles. His parents divorced before he was two, and both were reluctant to take him with them. Emma's nieces, Jeanette "Nettie" Buttles and Mary (Mamie) Buttles, took him with them to Italy; they moved to Florence in 1896 for the purpose of studying and painting. Allen had a gift for languages, and enlisted in WWII in the Navy when he was 17. He served as the captain's interpreter when they were in port. On D-Day, Allen piloted an LST. When Mary passed in 1956, Allen smuggled the 'Donna Laura Minghetti Leonardo' out of Italy, as the executer of her estate. The painting was allegedly too large to ship to the US, and was hidden behind the backseat of the vehicle Allen drove from Italy to Switzerland.

When Bernard Berenson declared in one of his books that the painting was not actually a Leonardo Da Vinci, Allen had the painting x-rayed at the University of Zurich and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This revealed that there was no sketch under the painting, which suggested that it was started by Leonardo but finished by a student. Hence, the painting is now deemed to be a product of the "school of Leonardo.'

While born in Ohio, his close relationship with Nettie and especially Mary Buttles reveals he spent quite a lot of time in Florence, where she lived. Allen got married in Florence in May of 1948, to Eleanor Louise Newton. They later divorced in June of 1981 in Leon Florida, where he died. Allen is buried with Mary, her sister Nettie, and their mother, Mary Ridgeway, in the Allori Cemetery in Florence.</text>

She is from Gig Harbor, Washington. Claire loves to read, travel, and learn about other time periods and societies. This is her first year as a research intern on the Emma B. Andrews Diary Project. She has been a key team member completing transcriptions and historical research.
Claire has taken the 5-credit 'Introduction to Digital Humanities' course offered through the University of Washington's Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilization and taught by Project Director Sarah Ketchley.

Claire says, "I like working on the project because I've learned valuable new skills, and because I love viewing Emma herself as a character study. She was a fascinating woman; I learn something new about her, and the time she lived in, every time I open her diary. The preservation of history and sharing that history with others through digitization and/or curatorial work is something I have always been interested in, and I am lucky to be a part of it on this project."</text>
